Jamie Carragher issues warning to Arsenal after Manchester City win Premier League title
Jamie Carragher has questioned when Arsenal will have a better chance to win the Premier League after they ‘blew’ their title challenge this season. Manchester City have been crowned champions for the third year in a row despite Arsenal sitting top for 248 days of the elongated 2022-23 campaign. Arsenal were looking to win their first league title since 2004 and amassed 50 points in the first-half of the campaign, only to crumble at the business end of the season. The collapse began last month when Mikel Arteta’s side surrendered two-goal leads to draw 2-2 with Liverpool and West Ham, before needing two late goals to rescue a point against bottom-placed Southampton. Arsenal were then thumped 4-1 by title rivals Manchester City and have lost their last two games against Brighton and Nottingham Forest to put a premature end to the title race. Man City sit four points ahead of the Gunners with three games remaining and could yet win a historic treble this season ahead of FA Cup and Champions League finals next month. Given Man City’s dominance in recent years and potential title challenges from Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea next season, Carragher has questioned when Arsenal will be in a better position to win the Premier League.
Manchester City propose Barcelona target an irresistible offer – report
One of the main targets for FC Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window is to strengthen their midfield, especially as their veteran midfielder, Sergio Busquets is leaving the club. A number of targets have been identified to strengthen this area, the most closely associated with the club being Ilkay Gundogan. The German international has been a part of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side since 2016, and is one of the key parts of the club’s squad. However, his contract at the club is running out, and the club and the player have not been able to reach an agreement for a renewal yet. It was reported that the number of years offered to the player has been one of the main areas of disagreement, with Manchester City offering only a one-year agreement, which is not acceptable for the player. As the likelihood of his being a free agent this summer increased, he was approached by FC Barcelona for a move to Camp Nou. According to SPORT, the Catalans offered the player a three-year contract, and there were close contacts between the Catalans and the player’s agents for such a move. However, the latest reports from English news outlet “The Sunday Times” now claim that Manchester City is open to give in to Gundogan’s demands, and offer him a three-year contract. The reports further suggest that Gundogan finds such a proposal from the English side irresistible, and would definitely prefer to remain at City if he is provided with a three-year contract, as opposed to joining Barcelona with the same number of years on offer. Still, FC Barcelona like the player a lot, and the transfer market is yet to open officially. A lot can change in the coming months, and the player will remain a source of speculation till he publicly puts his signature on one of the contracts on offer.
Liverpool’s transfer pursuit of Premier League star at advanced stage but Chelsea hovering
Liverpool are reportedly at an advanced stage of their transfer pursuit of Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. However, Chelsea also seem to have an interest in the Argentina international, with Fabrizio Romano explaining that Mauricio Pochettino appreciates his fellow countryman. Speaking on his YouTube channel, as quoted in the Daily Briefing, Romano provided an update on Mac Allister, which sounded very optimistic from a Liverpool point of view. The Reds urgently need to make changes in midfield this summer, but it remains to be seen if they will definitely get Mac Allister in, with Romano stressing that this deal is not done yet. Chelsea would also do well to add a proven Premier League player of Mac Allister’s calibre to their squad, though they also look in need of a more defensive-minded player in that area of the pitch. Romano says that’s currently Chelsea’s priority, but it does seem like it’s worth keeping an eye on this potential transfer battle with Liverpool.
Barcelona edge closer to signing Ruben Neves
Ruben Neves has edged closer to joining Barcelona after appearing to bid goodbye to the Wolverhampton Wanderers fans on Saturday. According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Ruben Neves will likely join Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old appeared to bid the Wolverhampton Wanderers fans goodbye after the game against Everton on Saturday. And personal terms are not an issue for the player or the Blaugrana. Ruben Neves has gone from strength to strength since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers from FC Porto in July 2017. One of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League, the Portuguese international is a pivotal figure for the Black Country outfit. And he has been the club’s captain this season following Conor Coady’s loan move to Everton. The 26-year-old has turned out over 250 times for the Premier League club, chipping in with 30 goals and 13 assists. But Neves’s stint with Wolverhampton Wanderers will likely end in the summer transfer window. And such a situation has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona. Neves has been on Barcelona’s radar for a long time. But the Catalan giants have not launched the offensive for the Wolverhampton Wanderers skipper for a few reasons. Firstly, Barcelona’s financial woes have prohibited them from securing his services. In addition, Xavi Hernandez is not keen on having the player in his squad. Such reasons have compelled Barcelona to previously rule out signing Neves. But Jorge Mendes has been pushing the Blaugrana to sign the 26-year-old from Wolverhampton Wanderers. And recent reports have claimed that personal terms will not be an issue for Barcelona or the player. The Catalan giants are now closing in on securing his services. The Portuguese international appeared to bid goodbye to the Wolverhampton Wanderers fans after their final home game of the 2022/23 season on Saturday. And with Neves keen on joining Barcelona, his Premier League suitors will face an uphill task to sign him. But it is unclear if Barcelona can match his market value of €40 million.
Man City could hand Arsenal double transfer blow as Joao Cancelo lined up in Bayern Munich swap
Manchester City could deliver a major blow to Arsenal's hopes of signing Joao Cancelo in order to engineer a swap deal with Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old defender has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium lately, with the German giants seemingly unlikely to keep him on a permanent basis as things stand. Cancelo joined the Bavarians on loan in January in search of greater first-team opportunities after he was dropped for Rico Lewis, but his time at the Allianz Arena hasn't quite gone to plan. The Portugal international has featured 14 times for Bayern in the Bundesliga this term, directly contributing towards five goals. While Cancelo has continued to showcase his excellent ability, the German giants have been knocked out of both the DFB Pokal and the Champions League since his arrival. Meanwhile, his parent club, City, have just won a fifth Premier League title in six years and they still have two major finals yet to play. Nevertheless, Cancelo, who reportedly has a £60million asking price, is expected to leave the Etihad Stadium in the summer and he's been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal. However, according to the Sunday Mirror, City will propose a swap deal to Bayern which would allow them to keep the Portuguese star in exchange for Joshua Kimmich, who has also emerged as a possible Gunners target this summer. The report states that Guardiola is 'adamant' that Cancelo is no longer part of his plans after reportedly disrupting the dressing room following his return from the World Cup in December. While Mikel Arteta may once been optimistic of signing the versatile defender, City look set to puff their chest and crush the Gunners' hopes. Ahead of Bayern's 3-1 home defeat to RB Leipzig on Saturday afternoon, Thomas Tuchel issued an update on Cancelo's future. The former Chelsea boss said: "I have the impression that he feels very comfortable here. "But in the end all parties are part of the decision. His desire in training is unique. I have the feeling that he is really happy here. We’ll discuss everything else after the end of the season." If City are to beat Arsenal to the signing of Kimmich then they must also fend off Barcelona. According to Spanish publication Marca, the Catalan side have identified the Germany international as a replacement for Sergio Busquets, who is leaving the Camp Nou this summer.
9 goals, 10 assists this season: Man Utd have held transfer talks with 22-year-old’s agent
Manchester United are interested in signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season. The 22-year-old has established himself as a key player for the German club and his performances have caught the attention of the Red Devils. Manchester United are hoping to add more depth to the right-back department and Frimpong would be a quality long-term signing. Aaron Wan Bissaka has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order. He has not been a regular starter for Erik ten Hag this season and the former Crystal Palace defender needs to leave in order to play regularly. Manchester United will have to replace him adequately if he leaves the summer and Frimpong seems like the perfect alternative. The 22-year-old Dutchman is reportedly keen on a return to the Premier League, and a move to Manchester United would appeal to him. According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have held positive discussions regarding a potential move with the player’s agent and it remains to be seen whether they come forward with an official offer now. “They had a meeting with the agent of the player, it was one month ago. It was a positive meeting. Frimpong is giving priority to Premier League football in general. He would love to return to Manchester, he was in the Manchester City academy. He appreciates the city and the lifestyle there.”
